A landscape designed to restore a sense of connection between one of Remuera’s grandest historic homes and its expansive site.

Details

With a design proposed in March 2017, and after a challenging and at times complex build, we completed the project with final planting towards the end of 2022.

Apart from the boundary walls, everything else outside of the house footprint is new. A significant amount of time and thought went into creating a landscape which is appropriate to the architecture as well as its location at the foot of Ōhinerau, Mt Hobson.

The result is a garden that feels a bit more European than New Zealand in its form – largely a response to the Arts & Crafts style of the house built in 1916 – but finished with materials closer to home. Some of the detailing relied heavily on Jared’s formative landscape years in England. A considerable undertaking made possible by an excellent builder and an impassioned client.

More than 700 new plants were introduced alongside the property’s established specimen trees, bringing new layers of greenery and helping reconnect the garden to its sheltered microclimate.

A new pool, lawns and terraces are integrated into the landscape rather than treated as separate elements, while a curved driveway and porte cochère create a formal arrival sequence.

One of the more distinctive interventions is a large water feature, designed in collaboration with acoustic specialists to help mask the sound of traffic from Remuera Road. The cascading water adds another sensory layer to the garden while reinforcing the feeling of enclosure and retreat.
