A considered response to a compact Grey Lynn garden, where limited space called for a flexible approach to planting and a strong connection to the interior of the home.

With the garden primarily viewed from the main living areas, the design focuses on creating depth, movement and an interesting outlook within a confined footprint.

Rather than filling the space with fixed garden beds, a series of custom-made aluminium planters allows the planting to become a flexible part of the architecture. Recessed castors mean the planters can be easily moved and rearranged, allowing the garden to adapt to different uses and occasions.

Cloud-pruned Podocarpus gracilior provide structure and height, with Pratia planted beneath to soften the planters and create a low, textural layer.

The restrained palette gives the garden a sense of permanence while retaining an element of playfulness, making the most of a small urban space without compromising its flexibility.
