Set on the idyllic shoreline of a private beach, the landscaping plays a vital role in anchoring this unique home.

Details

A landscape shaped by its extraordinary coastal setting, Omata Beach House sits within a secluded Northland bay surrounded by ancient pōhutukawa, native bush and steep, rocky terrain. The landscape works closely with the architecture to ensure the house feels embedded within – rather than imposed upon – its environment.

The existing landform was carefully reworked to accommodate the house, while retaining the character and natural drama of the site.

Stone, planting and existing vegetation are used to create a sense of continuity between the built structure and the surrounding landscape. The garden is deliberately restrained, allowing the established pōhutukawa and native bush to remain the dominant visual elements.

Around the house, planting softens the architectural forms and helps integrate the stone plinth into the terrain.

Paths and terraces create a gentle transition between the house, garden and wider coastal landscape, while more intimate planted areas provide shelter and privacy without closing off the connection to the bay.

The result is a landscape that feels natural and quietly established – less a conventional garden than an extension of the Northland environment, where architecture and planting work together as one.
